Can Someone Else Pick Up My Firearm Order or Transfer?

September 03, 20261 min read

Generally, no. The actual buyer or transferee must appear in person and complete the required firearm-transfer process.

Another person cannot take the customer’s place, complete ATF Form 4473 on the customer’s behalf, or undergo the required background check for the customer.

Who must appear for the transfer?

The person who is the actual buyer or transferee must:

  • Appear in person

  • Present the required identification

  • Personally complete and certify ATF Form 4473

  • Complete all required federal and Virginia background-check procedures

  • Wait for ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company to authorize release of the firearm

The name on the order does not automatically override the legal transfer requirements.

What about a firearm purchased as a gift?

A bona fide gift may be permitted when the purchaser uses their own money to acquire the firearm as a genuine gift.

It is not a bona fide gift when another person provides money, services, or something of value to have the purchaser acquire the firearm for them.

The person completing the transaction with ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company must truthfully qualify as the actual buyer or transferee.

What should I do before pickup?

Before visiting ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company:

  • Wait for the pickup notification

  • Call 757-410-2955 if the order name, purchaser, or intended recipient creates any uncertainty
