Customer reviewing firearm-transfer eligibility paperwork with a gun-shop employee

How Do I Know Whether I Am Eligible to Buy or Transfer a Firearm in Virginia?

September 03, 20262 min read

Eligibility to purchase or receive a firearm depends on federal law, Virginia law, and each person’s circumstances. ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company cannot determine or guarantee eligibility before the required transaction process, and our staff cannot provide legal advice.

The official determination is made through the required forms and background check at the time of purchase or transfer.

What should I expect at the shop?

The actual buyer or transferee must appear in person and:

  • Bring a valid, current government-issued photo ID showing their legal name, date of birth, and current residential address.

  • Provide qualifying government-issued supplemental documentation if the address on the photo ID is not current.

  • Complete ATF Form 4473 and the applicable Virginia paperwork truthfully and completely.

  • Meet the applicable age and residency requirements for the type of firearm involved.

  • Receive an approved background-check determination before the firearm can be released.

A background check may return an approved, delayed, or denied result.

Can ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company check my eligibility before I order?

No. ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company cannot access or pre-screen a customer’s complete criminal, court, mental-health, immigration, or other government records.

Our staff also cannot override a delayed or denied determination.

What should I do if I am unsure?

Before ordering a firearm, review the official resources available from the Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives:

If your question involves a conviction, protective order, restoration of rights, immigration status, mental-health order, controlled-substance issue, or another personal legal circumstance, consult a qualified attorney before attempting a purchase or transfer.

What happens if my background check is delayed or denied?

ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company must follow the determination provided by the appropriate government agency.

If your transaction is delayed, you must wait for further instructions. If it is denied, use the official Virginia State Police review or appeal process. Do not submit another transaction in an attempt to avoid or replace the original result unless the appropriate agency instructs you to do so.
