What Happens if My Virginia Firearm Background Check Is Delayed?

A delayed Virginia firearm background check is not an approval or denial. It means additional review is required before the transaction can be completed.

What does a delayed response mean?

Virginia State Police may return a delayed response when information requires further review to determine whether it relates to the customer.

During that review:

• ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company cannot predict the final result

• The firearm remains with ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company

• The customer must wait for further instructions

• A delayed response should not be treated as a guaranteed future approval

How long will the review take?

The amount of time can vary. Some reviews are resolved quickly, while others require additional research. Extended review requirements may also apply to certain customers under 21.

A delayed response does not create a guaranteed pickup date. ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company will contact the customer when the transaction has received the status required to proceed.

What should I do while waiting?

Customers should:

• Keep their telephone number and email address current

• Respond if ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company requests additional information

• Wait for confirmation before returning for pickup

• Avoid submitting another transaction in an attempt to bypass the pending review

What if the background check is denied?

ISFA-4 Defense Supply Company cannot overturn or independently resolve a denial. Customers may contact the Virginia State Police Firearms Transaction Center at 804-674-2292 or review the Virginia State Police denial-information page.
